Dalverzin’s gold: a symbiosis of traditions

A unique cultural monument of Northern Bactria are gold items found in 1972 as part of the famous treasure weighing 36 kg at the Dalverzintepa settlement. According to archaeological data, the treasure dates back to the second half of the 1st century AD. Jewelry demonstrates the high technological level of the work of ancient craftsmen. So, among the unique is the necklace, made by a complex combination of various techniques. The golden badge in the form of a curled up beast, which has grabbed one of its paws with its mouth, is also magnificent. The jewelry technique of making a badge goes back to the so-called inlaid style, and the image of an animal is in the circle of expressive images of the “animal” style. A similar type of beast is found on gold plaques of the 5th–4th centuries. BC. from Siberia and Ziviye (Iran) and on bronze — from the Minusinsk steppe and Chilikta (Kazakhstan). Jewelry things 3rd century AD from Shamshi (northern Kyrgyzstan). Similar plaques, but with the image of an eagle, are kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the British Museum in London. Jewelry from Dalverzintepe expands the understanding of the artistic culture of Kushan Bactria. It is like a kind of alloy, in which a complex unity of Kushan art is formed on the basis of penetration into the Bactrian substrate proper of Hellenistic, Scythian-Asian and Indian elements.
