Uzundara fortress in Surkhandarya to become a tourist destination

The ancient fortress of Uzundara, located in the Boysun district of Surkhandarya region, is a unique historical monument blending elements of ancient Greek and local architecture. Built on a waterless mountain peak, this fortress played a strategically significant role as a defensive structure on the border between Bactria and Sogdiana. The defensive system also included Darband and other protective walls, ensuring border security. Uzundara Fortress served as an administrative and military center. Its walls are adorned with reliefs and heraldic images, and it was home to border units tasked with territorial defense. During archaeological excavations, a rare silver drachma featuring Alexander the Great wearing a lion-headed helmet was discovered. Coins from the era of Antiochus I were also unearthed, shedding light on the financial and political life of the time. Outside the fortress, archaeologists uncovered stone slabs coated with alabaster mortar, along with full baths and bathing basins. These findings provide valuable insights into the daily life and culture of the fortress garrison. Archaeological research is ongoing in collaboration with the Academies of Sciences of Uzbekistan and Russia. A project to restore the archaeological site has been developed by Uzbekistan's Islamic Civilization Center. According to the project, Uzundara Fortress will be reconstructed and transformed into a tourist destination.
